Game studios would shift their perspective from monetizing users to focusing on balancing and expanding the in-game economy. This would transform key aspects of game development and business models as follows:
Airdrop
As-is: Token being used to extract value from players (sell tokens)
To-be: Token being used to reward the behaviour to fuel the growth of the in-game economy w. seasonality
Product
As-is: Game being used to serve token sales before TGE
To-be: Game with an in-game economy structure using a token as an exchange medium
Business Model
As-is: Pay to Win
To-be: Fee-based & Subscription (e.g., Battle Pass)
#Challenges
There are significant challenges in implementing a fee-based model in Web3 gaming. Balancing the economy and protecting it from bots requires live-ops resources heavily, while achieving the network effect to increase the trading volume can be difficult due to the market size of current web3 gamers being relatively small, and web3’s high friction and low accessibility for web2 players.
However, leveraging Telegram as a channel offers a promising solution. Its low-friction, highly accessible nature can help overcome the barriers to entry for users. By leveraging the IP power of Ragnarok and established content, i'm pretty confident to attract users from the beginning, laying the groundwork for an open economy within the Telegram mini-app ecosystem.
