⭕️ NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Monday ordered the NYPD's first review of its use-of-force policies in a decade, prompted by the 2024 police killing of Win Rozario, a 19-year-old in a mental health crisis.

Officers shot Rozario five times in his family's Queens home after a 911 call in March 2024. The Civilian Complaint Review Board substantiated excessive-force claims against two officers, but one of them, Salvatore Alongi, retired in May before his disciplinary case could proceed. Mamdani also announced separate accountability measures, including a system to ensure disciplinary cases finish before officers retire, decertification referrals for officers who retire with charges pending, which would block rehiring by other New York agencies, and $2.6 million to triple staffing at the NYPD Inspector General's office. The Detectives' Endowment Association, the union for 20,000 active and retired NYC detectives, said Mamdani "would rather empower and fund agencies like the biased, anti-police CCRB" than support officers. Nerdeen Kiswani of the Palestine solidarity group Within Our Lifetime, a frequent critic of Mamdani, urged supporters to defend the decision: "We criticize when he needs to do better and we support when he comes through."
