Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has expressed “deep concern” over US sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC), saying the move is incompatible with Japan’s position. She pledged to continue engaging Washington and support the court in fulfilling its mandate.
Japan has joined Canada, the UK, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Denmark in opposing the sanctions and reaffirming support for the ICC’s independence and impartiality. The dispute marks a rare public point of friction between Tokyo and Washington as pressure on the international court intensifies.
