🇺🇸 House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith (R-Mo.) is threatening to subpoena individual BreakThrough News journalists, the outlet said Friday.

BT said a new letter from Smith names reporters Rania Khalek, Zoe Alexandra and Amanda Yee, along with other staff. It warns that each could be subpoenaed for a deposition in Washington unless the outlet gives up legal rights, including First Amendment privileges. BT previously cited First Amendment press and association rights to shield its sources, donors, and internal communications. The committee subpoenaed BT's records in July and has accused it of serving as a "foreign agent" of China, which BT rejects. BT says all its major donations come from US organizations and calls the probe an attempt to intimidate the press.
