๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ธ NEW: Palestinian factions meeting in Cairo this week agreed to recommend postponing the Nov. 28 Legislative Council election, the first in 20 years.

Fatah also froze plans to form a new National Council pending national dialogue, Fatah's Jibril Rajoub told Al Araby TV on Thursday. The National Council is the PLO's parliament and represents Palestinians worldwide. The Legislative Council is the Palestinian Authority's parliament in the West Bank and Gaza. President Mahmoud Abbas has not formally announced a delay or a new date for the Legislative Council. โญ•๏ธ What the factions said: โžค Fatah spokesman Abd al-Fattah Dawla told Ultra Palestine that the delay to the legislative election is "not necessarily a year and could be months." He said its length is up to the factions to agree. Separately, Al-Araby al-Jadeed reported that August 2027 has been floated as a preliminary new date. โžค The Popular Front's Maher Mezher said the four factions provisionally agreed to postpone the election by one year. He said the time would allow a comprehensive national dialogue to rebuild the Palestinian political system, reform the PLO and form a transitional National Council. โžค Islamic Jihad's Muhammad al-Hindi said the Cairo meetings "led to an agreement to postpone the Palestinian elections." He said the factions would set a new date by consensus. Islamic Jihad will not field candidates but could back a nationally agreed list. โžค Hamas's Basem Naim told the AP that the November election is premature. He said Hamas would support a postponement if it allows national dialogue. He called elections "part of a democratic process" that depends on first agreeing how to manage internal disputes and form a united leadership. He did not say how long the delay should be. Abbas, elected in 2005, has ruled by decree for years. He promised a 2026 vote under EU pressure but also called off the last planned election in 2021.
