⭕️ Hamas's Oct. 7 paraglider unit has roots in a 1987 operation, according to a new history by the research account Mujamma Haraket. That November, the PFLP-General Command flew motorized hang gliders from Lebanon into Israel and killed six soldiers.

Yahya Sinwar later credited its leader, Ahmad Jibril, as an inspiration, according to a July 2021 column in the Saudi newspaper Okaz by Muhammad al-Sa'id. Al-Sa'id described a recording in which Sinwar, sitting beside Jibril at a Palestinian gathering, tells him: "We learned struggle from you, and you were the inspiration for us in military operations." Hamas trained the unit through a civilian paragliding company in Gaza. Hamas leader Mahmoud Mardawi told Al Jazeera in 2025 that the company first rented flights to the public, and then raised prices until its sessions were booked by Qassam fighters. He called it "camouflage against the enemy." BBC Verify geolocated Qassam footage showing the unit training north of Rafah by August 2022.
