⭕️ Pro-Palestinian demonstrators protested New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani at an Oct. 7 remembrance vigil on Wednesday evening over Israeli real estate events in the city that market homes in illegal West Bank settlements, according to video posted by Within Our Lifetime and journalist Timmy Facciola.

🔹PAL-Awda NY/NJ, a Palestinian right-of-return group that has led protests outside New York synagogues hosting the events, joined various Students for Justice in Palestine chapters, DSA’s youth wing yDSA, and Within Our Lifetime in the protest. 🔹In a statement, PAL-Awda listed three demands of the popular New York mayor: “1) Take meaningful action against the sale of stolen land in NYC 2) Remove the tax exempt status of religious institutions and other locations hosting stolen land sales 3) Drop Jessica Tisch as NYPD Police Commissioner and disband the Strategic Response Group” 🔹 Mamdani kept on Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, who was appointed under former Mayor Eric Adams. Tisch has defended the Strategic Response Group, the NYPD unit that polices protests, and has pushed to reform it rather than eliminate it. As a candidate, Mamdani promised to disband the unit, writing on X that it had "brutalized countless New Yorkers exercising their first amendment rights" and cost the city millions in lawsuit settlements. Nine months into his term, the unit is still operating. City Hall told NY1 in March that he remains committed to disbanding it, but it has given no timeline. 🔹 Organizers of the rally accuse Mamdani of allowing the NYPD to "surveil, arrest, and violently suppress" protesters opposing the land sales. In May, police surrounded an expo at Park East Synagogue in Manhattan with a nearly three-block perimeter and held protesters in pens, according to reporting from amNY. Officers pepper-sprayed a crowd that police said had surrounded an officer. Police made four arrests at a similar event in Midwood, Brooklyn, according to PIX11. Mamdani defended the police response, telling reporters that officers had protected access to the synagogue. 🔹Mamdani's office has said he is "deeply opposed" to the expos and called the settlement sales illegal under international law. But the city has not announced any action against the events. The mayor has no direct power to strip religious tax exemptions, which are governed by federal and state law.
