⭕️ Bernie Sanders and Zohran Mamdani marked the third anniversary of Oct. 7 with statements that diverge on how to describe the attack. Sanders called it "a horrific act of terrorism." Mamdani called it "horrific war crimes."

▪️The terms carry different implications as "terrorism" has no agreed definition in international law and is applied almost exclusively to non-state actors, not to state violence on a similar or larger scale. ▪️Since 9/11, the label has been used to justify open-ended military campaigns that have led to the deaths of 22 million people worldwide. Israel describes its war in Gaza as counterterrorism and has cited "terror infrastructure" to justify strikes on hospitals, schools and homes. ▪️"War crimes," by contrast, are defined under the Geneva Conventions and apply equally to all parties. That's also the standard the International Criminal Court used when it sought arrest warrants for both Hamas leaders and Israel's Netanyahu and Gallant. ▪️The statements differ elsewhere too. Sanders said Israel "had the right to defend itself," that killing civilians "is never resistance," and attributed the war to "the Netanyahu government." Mamdani said the suffering "did not begin" on Oct. 7, named "occupation and apartheid," and cited more than 1,400 Palestinians killed since the ceasefire. ▪️Both called Israel's war a genocide and called for ending US weapons transfers.
