The fastest way to test claims of Ethereum institutional buying is to skip the price-prediction videos and read three public datasets: daily net flows into US spot Ether ETFs, corporate ETH treasury filings, and exchange wallet balances. As of October 2026, those datasets disagreed. According to Farside Investors, US spot Ether ETFs posted roughly $1.18 billion of net outflows between October 1 and October 23, while Bitmine, the largest corporate ETH holder, told investors in a press release filed with the SEC that it kept buying every week. This guide shows where to find each number, how to read it, and what each metric cannot tell you.

Videos titled along the lines of "Wall Street is about to pour into Ethereum" draw large audiences, and Tom Lee's bullish comments circulate widely. None of that is a measurement of money moving. All figures below were checked against the original pages on October 26, 2026. The most recent one or two days of any flow series can still be revised.

Three datasets that reveal Ethereum institutional buying

"Institutions" covers very different buyers: asset managers and advisers who buy ETF shares, public companies that hold ETH on their balance sheet, and hedge funds that trade futures. Public data captures the first two fairly well. Exchange balances add an indirect view of where coins are moving across the whole market. Knowing what each dataset measures prevents a common mistake, which is treating a single bullish headline as proof of a broad trend.

The three update on different clocks. ETF data arrives once per US trading day, corporate disclosures come weekly or quarterly depending on the company, and exchange balances change block by block. To answer "did institutions buy this week?" you need to line them up over the same window.

How to read spot Ethereum ETF flows

When investors buy new shares of a spot Ether ETF, the issuer acquires ether to back them; redemptions work in reverse. Net flow, creations minus redemptions, is therefore the most direct daily read of demand coming through the ETF channel. Farside's table lists funds such as ETHA, FETH and ETHE as columns and trading days as rows. Figures are in millions of US dollars, and numbers in parentheses are outflows.

September vs. October 2026

Summing Farside's daily rows by month shows a clear reversal. Across September 2026's 21 trading days, net flows totaled about +$831 million, including a single-day high of +$270 million on September 21. Over the 17 trading days from October 1 to 23, the total was about -$1.18 billion. Fourteen of those days were outflows, and only three were positive: +$24.8 million on the 13th, +$14.9 million on the 21st and +$4.4 million on the 23rd. BlackRock's ETHA alone accounted for roughly -$1.03 billion over that stretch, including the entire -$201.9 million on October 6.

Read the cumulative number carefully. Farside shows about $12.75 billion of net inflows since launch, but that figure already nets out roughly $5.5 billion that left Grayscale's higher-fee ETHE. Much of the activity was investors switching funds, so the cumulative total alone does not tell you how much genuinely new money arrived.

When trackers disagree

Expect small differences between sources. For October 23, Farside showed +$4.4 million while DefiLlama's daily stats showed +$3.6 million, and their cumulative totals were about $12.75 billion and $12.80 billion. On Farside, one fund's cell for that day was still blank. Late-reporting funds, cut-off times and rounding explain most of these gaps. Choose one tracker as your baseline and label the latest values as provisional.

Verify corporate ETH holdings in SEC filings

Companies that hold ETH as a treasury asset usually announce changes by press release, and US-listed firms often furnish the same release to the SEC as an exhibit to Form 8-K. Bitmine's Exhibit 99.1 dated October 19, 2026, is a good template for what to extract.

• As-of time: 3:00 p.m. ET on October 18, 2026
• Holdings: 6,041,481 ETH, valued at $2,365 per ETH using Coinbase pricing
• Purchases in the prior week: 12,535 ETH
• Share of supply: 4.9% of 122.1 million ETH, against a stated 5% goal
• Staked ETH: 5,067,309, about 84% of holdings
• The company's claim that it has bought ETH every week since its treasury strategy began on June 30, 2025

Now compare scale. Multiplying 12,535 ETH by the filing's $2,365 price gives about $29.6 million of weekly buying. Farside shows US spot Ether ETFs at roughly -$220.7 million for October 19 to 23. The windows are offset by about a day, but the gap is wide enough to matter: ETF outflows were several times larger than the weekly purchases of the most active corporate buyer. Reading only corporate-buying headlines would hide that.

Cross-check third-party leaderboards

Treasury leaderboards are useful shortcuts, but their math and lifespans vary. The Strategic ETH Reserve site listed Bitmine at 6,041,481 ETH and 4.95% of supply while announcing it would wind down soon. The company itself reported 4.9% for the same holdings, likely because of rounding or a different supply figure. When you quote a number, quote the filing and its as-of date.

Use exchange balances as supporting evidence

Falling exchange balances are often read as "less ETH available to sell." That interpretation depends entirely on which addresses an analytics firm has labeled as exchange wallets. Glassnode's exchange data notice says its reported balances are best treated as lower bounds, that history can be revised when new addresses are identified, and that internal wallet reshuffles can look like large inflows or outflows. Its own coverage table marks major venues such as Coinbase and Kraken as not including verified proof-of-reserves addresses.

Coins moving to ETF custodians or corporate custody accounts can also show up as an exchange-balance decline. Use this metric to confirm a direction already visible in ETF flows or filings, not as standalone proof. If you also want to separate leveraged positioning from spot demand, theddari's funding rate arbitrage view shows where perpetual funding is stretched across venues, and the Kimchi premium page compares Korean exchange prices with global prices, which helps flag regional retail demand that is unrelated to US institutions.

How to read Tom Lee's Ethereum outlook

Tom Lee is a co-founder of Fundstrat and chairman of Bitmine. Bitmine's October 19 filing quotes him on "the crypto bull market that we expect to be coming" and notes an October 7 chairman's message titled "Crypto Bull Underway — This Cycle Likely the Largest." The same document acknowledges that investor risk appetite had contracted in recent weeks and labels these views forward-looking statements whose results could differ materially.

• Check incentives. An executive of a company whose value tracks its ETH holdings has a clear stake in the outcome.
• Look for the data behind any price target, such as flows, supply or network usage, rather than the target itself.
• Compare the video title with the original remark. "Could reach" often becomes "will reach" in a thumbnail.
• Note the time frame. A forecast with a deadline, such as "within a year," can be checked later.

Commentary tells you about sentiment, not settlement. In the same week Bitmine was buying, money was leaving ETFs. Theddari's crypto Telegram trends page shows which Ethereum topics are being discussed most, which is useful context, but chatter volume is not evidence of purchases either.

A repeatable checklist

1. 1

   Fix the window

Decide whether you are checking a week or a month and write the dates in US trading days. Flows for a given day are published after the 4 p.m. New York close.

2. 2

   Total the ETF flows

Sum the daily values from one source, note which fund drove the largest moves, and flag the latest one or two days as provisional.

3. 3

   Read the filings

Pull holdings, timestamp, reference price and weekly purchases from SEC EDGAR or the company's IR page, convert to dollars and compare with the ETF total.

4. 4

   Confirm with exchange balances

See whether balances move in the same direction, and remember that one large transfer may be an internal reshuffle.

5. 5

   File forecasts separately

Record the speaker's incentives, time frame and supporting data, and keep them apart from the flow numbers.

Applied to October 2026, this checklist does not support the claim that institutional money is flooding into Ethereum. One large public company kept accumulating, but US spot ETFs saw net outflows on most days of the month. Treat institutional demand as confirmed only when several independent datasets point the same way, and always record the as-of date and source alongside each number.
