⭕️ “We got new textbooks one day… and all of a sudden they were printed in Saudi Arabia instead of Egypt.”
Scholar @shireen818 walks through the Wahhabi infiltration of Yemen that intensified in the 1990s, and the Saudi push to spread fundamentalist Islam that put the Zaidi Shias in northern Yemen "at the center of the fight for the soul of Yemeni Islam," leading to the formation of Ansar Allah.
Saudi-backed Salafism took root in Yemen, when in 1979, cleric Muqbil al-Wadi'i returned from Saudi Arabia and founded the Dar al-Hadith school in Dammaj, in the heart of the Zaidi stronghold of Saada.
She says the push to impose this ideology led Zaidi Shia Muslims in northern Yemen to organize and resist. Zaidi cleric Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi helped found the Believing Youth movement in the early 1990s, which grew to include people of all religious factions who “valued sovereignty” above all, into Ansar Allah ("Supporters of God"). He was killed by Yemeni government forces in 2004, and the movement took his family name.
The United States, which has backed the Saudi-led war and blockade to starve Yemen and push it to the brink of famine after 2015, now has more than 200 intelligence and military analysts in command centers inside Saudi Arabia helping select targets for the new offensive against Ansarallah, The New York Times reported Sunday, citing one current and one former US official.
The US is also refueling Saudi warplanes on what officials described as “defensive air patrols,” after halting refueling for the coalition in 2018 under congressional pressure.
