A ProPublica investigation published September 22 found that the Department of Justice’s public corruption unit, just before it was gutted by President Donald Trump, was circling Maine Republican Senator Susan Collins after her campaign solicited illegal contributions from a Hawaii-based defense contractor.

The company, Navatek, sent $150,000 to Collins’ super PAC through a shell company-amusingly named Society of Young Scientist and Engineers LLC-in exchange for $32 million in federal contracts funneled to the company shortly after. Collins appears to have been aware of and directly involved in the scheme: “Seven days after the super PAC cashed the check from [Martin] Kao's shell company, one of [Scott] Reed's subordinates emailed a Navatek lobbyist asking for Kao's phone number: ‘Senator Collins would like to call Martin to thank him,’” ProPublica wrote. The article also included a picture of the check sent to the super PAC and emails discussing the scheme to conceal the donation. Nevertheless, the Collins campaign said the allegations had already been investigated and there was no crime. Drop Site’s @JulianAndreone went up to Capitol Hill to ask senators whether this reporting about their colleague’s corruption concerned them.
