⭕️ The Israeli military launched a propaganda push Thursday to paint 170 Palestinian journalists in Gaza as "terrorists who posed as journalists," and in at least one case quietly revised evidence that had previously been discredited.

The military published "The Press Files" on its website, alongside a video from spokesperson Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin claiming to reveal "the truth behind these so-called 'journalists,'" tagging the Freedom of the Press Foundation and telling it to update its records. Israel-based +972 Magazine reported in August 2025 on a secret Israeli military intelligence unit, the "Legitimization Cell," created after October 7 to shore up Israel's image abroad and blunt global outrage over its conduct in Gaza, including its killing of journalists. Sources told the outlet the unit hunted for material to justify killings after they happened, later declassifying intelligence for PR. "If the global media is talking about Israel killing innocent journalists, then immediately there's a push to find one journalist who might not be so innocent," one said. Its original case against Al Jazeera journalist Ismail al-Ghoul, killed in an Israeli airstrike in July 2024, rested on a document it said showed he received a Hamas military rank in 2007, when al-Ghoul, born in 1997, would have been 10. His page in Israel’s new files shows a document dated 2014, when he would have been 17. Palestinian journalist Mohammed Abdul Aziz al-Najjar was killed Wednesday in an Israeli strike on his hometoown Khuza’a, east of Khan Younis, according to Gaza’s Government Media Office. The office said his death brought the number of journalists killed by Israeli forces in Gaza to 263. The father of three was returned to his family without his head, Palestinian media reported.
