๐ต Bill Gates warns that AI is set to eliminate jobs on a massive scale. Of those who predict it will create more jobs than it destroys, he said, "I don't understand what they're thinking."
Gates said coding is the first profession where AI has become reliable enough to replace human workers, and predicted accounting, legal work, telesales and customer support will follow within a few years.
He rejected the argument that cheaper AI will create enough new demand to keep people employed. Longer-lasting tires, he noted, didn't make people drive more; they just meant fewer jobs making tires.
Gates said the disruption could last 20 years or more before AI delivers what he called "super abundance.โ He says this generation's job is to get through it with humanity still in control, keeping bioterror events and job losses to a minimum "over what's probably a 20 year plus transition period."
He proposed making companies pay the same payroll tax on AI and robot labor as on human workers, and designating child care, elder care and parts of medicine and education as "human reserved" jobs.
