UNRWA Acting Commissioner-General Christian Saunders said the agency would put its personnel and resources at the disposal of the Trump-backed institutions overseeing Gaza.
“You have President Trump’s 20-point plan. You have Security Council Resolution 2803. You have the Board of Peace, and you have the NCAG. That is the game in town at the moment,” Saunders said at a press conference following UNRWA’s annual ministerial meeting on Thursday.
“We all have to get behind that. And that also means UNRWA,” he said. “So we will put our people, our resources at their disposal to help them be successful.”
▪️ He acknowledged Israel’s longstanding opposition to the agency over its connection to Palestinian refugees and the right of return, as well as the Trump administration advocating for the new bodies to fill a role UNRWA has historically performed.
▪️ “Israel sees, associates UNRWA with prolonging the refugee issue, with the right of return,” Saunders said. “The U.S. is sometimes echoing that same language.”
▪️ “As I said, I don’t see it as a competition,” Saunders added. “We will do whatever we can to make sure they’re successful because we have the same goal in mind, which is peace and relieving the distress of the people in Gaza.”
